Carl Giblin is the chief engineer of the Whitsunday’s most luxurious island complex, the five-star Hayman Island Resort.
As chief engineer, Carl oversees the maintenance of the resort grounds and the impressive swimming pools that are seven times the size of an Olympic sized swimming pool. Carl said the major issue of running the engineering department is finding qualified tradesmen to do the work.
“My major issue is getting qualified tradesmen but we are overcoming this by offering a good salary and conditions for the trades people and we plan our work well in advance. My other problem is because of the location, parts are not readily available and they take up to two weeks to arrive.”

Carl has been the chief engineer at Hayman Island Resort for a little more than eight months.
While he has not been at the resort long, Carl has more than 21 years experience in the industry having worked previously at Iririki Island Resort in Vanuatu and Shangri La’s Fijian Resort.
Carl said, “It was the challenges at Hayman Island Resort that I found very tempting so I decided that I had to have the job.”
This worldly traveller said he first got into hotel engineering because it is a hands-on job that he finds very rewarding. “I wanted a career that incorporated mechanical, electrical and building projects. Hotel engineering has all of the above including water treatment.”
Hayman Island Resort features 212 rooms, suites, penthouses and villas situated in either the Pool, Palm, Lagoon or Beach Wings. The Pool wing and Lagoon wing over looks the famous Hayman Island Resort pool that is situated in the heart of the resort.
