Accommodation managers can now promote themselves as being eco-friendly lock users.
Kaba Lodging Systems now offers the world’s first green keycard that is made from 100% PLA plastic. The eco friendly card works like any traditional magnetic stripe keycard but are made either from 100% recycled polyvinyl chloride plastic or from polylactide acid plastic. The high-performance PLA is made from a corn by-product and is both recyclable and biodegradable.
The environmental benefits derived from using green keys are significant. A hotel property that uses around 10,000 keycards annually will save approximately 25kg of materials and will help tip the scales against adding more biodegradable waste to our landfill.
The availability of Saflock and Ilco green keycards is another part of the Kaba’s Green Program that was launched in 2007 and reflects the company’s commitment to an improved environment and resources sustainability. To this end, the company has a line of Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive-compliant locks in the European Union also help US properties earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design points for the American certification for addressing specific environmental impacts.
