TQ's Guide to Just About Everything

AN32-1-TQ LogoVoluntourism, carbon offsetting and using social media to engage with tomorrow's travellers are among the topical subjects and sustainable business tips captured in a new Tourism Queensland guide.

Minister for tourism Jan Jarratt said the new Better Business Guide would arm Queensland tourism operators with business tips required to stay on top of current trends and build resilience.

"It's full of practical tips to help businesses promote their unique selling points, targeted marketing techniques, understand distribution systems and the carbon economy. The guide also contains information about how to stay globally competitive, what it means to be green and the important role of engaging with customers using online and social media."

The introductory online guide will help tourism businesses to implement sustainable business strategies with information on:

• Global competitors

• Distribution & commissions

• Maximising online sales

• Our changing climate

• What's carbon got to do with it?

• Think global, act local

Ms Jarratt said 2011 had been a tough year for tourism in Queensland following the floods and cyclones, the high Aussie dollar and foreign natural disasters in key international markets such as Japan and New Zealand.

"Immediately after these events we rolled out a series of fully subsidised workshops to help businesses develop recovery strategies and pursue opportunities for business growth," Ms Jarratt said.

"The Better Business Guide extends on this by providing an online guide to help small or new businesses establish themselves in the industry and start developing their own sustainable business plans."
