Boost to Gold Coast RTO Funding… up $3m

Funding of Gold Coast Tourism will increase by more than $3 million this financial year as the struggling industry works to get back on its feet.

A total of $14,761,783 will be raised by Gold Coast City Council through its tourism levy on 28,000 tourism-related businesses and properties.

Of that total, $13.9 million will be used to fund Gold Coast Tourism while the remainder will be used by council for tourism industry development, international relations and marketing.

During the 2010-11 financial year, the levy raised a total of $11.4 million, of which $10.5 million was used to fund Gold Coast Tourism.

On top of the levy council also provides funding of more than $3 million to Surfers Paradise Alliance, more than $1 million to Broadbeach Alliance and ongoing funding for Connecting Southern Gold Coast.

The council funding is the major contributor to Gold Coast Tourism which also receives $1.2 million a year from state and federal government grants, $500,000 from its 500 strong membership and $200,000 from visitor information centre revenue.
