The Outback Queensland Tourism Association says it has been a record-breaking September school holidays in the state’s inland centres.
The summer of natural disasters has meant the region’s tourism operators struggled earlier this year, with numbers down by up to 20%. But OQTA spokesman Tony Martin says a survey of outback operators and there has been a big increase in the number of families travelling west this month.
He says that is a sweetener for tourist businesses before the onset of summer.
“The area we cover with our members is more than 840,000 square kilometres,” he said. “We are actually getting reports from members right across that area that visitor numbers this September school holidays are beating all records of previous years.
“What we are actually experiencing is extended numbers later in the season.”
