Accommodation Boost for Mackay CBD

The mostly vacant site in Macalister St Mackay is set to be transformed from an inner city ‘Laundromat site’ into a serviced apartment complex and commercial premises.

Mackay regional councillors have approved a request to change the existing development approval from a multi-level, hotel style development to 129 multiple dwelling units, catering shop and commercial premise.

Planning and development portfolio councillor Diane Hatfield said, “The Mackay Regional Council local government area is one of the fastest growing in Queensland with an annual growth rate of 2.9% and positive growth forecast over the next two decades heading towards a population of 200,000 people. By removing the office component and allowing the units to be redesigned to be self contained for more flexible use by both permanent and short term/overnight accommodation will meet the current market demand.”
