Canberra moves to attract international flights

The ACT government said it will provide $1.8 million for specific marketing once the direct international flights begin following the completion of the multi-million dollar renovation to Canberra Airport next year.

Tourism minister Andrew Barr has been negotiating to establish direct international flights with countries such as New Zealand. He says the money would be spent over four years to encourage more tourists on the proposed direct flights.

“The work to date has focused on the New Zealand market with Auckland and Wellington and also in Singapore,” Mr Barr said. “And so if we are successful in our partnership with Canberra Airport and the airlines in establishing these international flights then we would provide Canberra marketing in to those cities.”
