Perth prison to become hostel

The old Fremantle Prison may be turned into budget accommodation. Fremantle mayor, Brad Pettitt, has said that cells in the former female wing of the old jail would be converted into backpacker accommodation.

The WA government granted some $250,000 towards the project.

Mr Pettitt said that a hostel in the prison would address the lack of budget accommodation in Perth while increasing the number of annual visitors to Fremantle.

YHA is reportedly behind the bid to create a 200-bed hostel on the old prison grounds.

YHA WA chief executive Domenic Pimpinella hopes the proposal gets the go ahead before the end of the year so that YHA can begin work on the hostel before the start of 2014.
