Newcastle Hotel Awaits Approval

Approval for a residential and hotel complex at Newcastle Beach is expected from the Newcastle Joint Regional Planning Panel this week.

Developer Keith Stronach’s proposed $100 million Arena complex includes a seven-level, 4½ star hotel with 100 rooms, a restaurant, bar and function area on the remaining undeveloped site of the former Royal Newcastle Hospital site on Shortland Esplanade.

Mr Stronach submitted his development application in June last year to Newcastle City Council but the project was referred to the JRPP because of its significant project value.

The residential offering will be 150 one and two-bedroom apartments, most located in an eight-level residential building and others within eight levels above the hotel.

If the JRPP gives Arena approval, Mr Stronach expects the prime real estate to go to market as early as next week.
