W Hotel is back before council

Melbourne City Council has confirmed it has received a revised application for the W Hotel in Melbourne from Jinshan Investments.

The proposed W Hotel – Australia’s first – was put on hold as massive public protests temporarily saved the heritage Palace Theatre from being demolished to make way for the luxury apartments. Victoria’s Department of Transport Planning and Local Infrastructure refused to grant a permit to demolish the theatre and build a new 72.25m mixed use complex.

Jinshan Investments planned a $180 million development that was to include 200 hotel rooms and 91 apartments. The entire theatre would have been demolished and Jinshan Investments was unable to get approval from the Melbourne Heritage Action group and Melbourne City Council while the state government also lodged an appeal against the application.

Plans for the site have now been scaled back reducing the complex from 30 storeys to 15 and removing the apartment content. The 194-room hotel has been retained.
