Mega-apartment tower planned for Melbourne

Singapore development company UEM Sunrise wants to build a 1343 apartment tower in Melbourne. The $350 million apartment building would be the third largest in the world by floor area, if approved.

At 82 storeys, the building – to be constructed on a La Trobe Street site opposite Melbourne Central shopping centre – will eclipse the Far East Consortium’s 701-unit tower on Spencer Street’s old power station site and the Eureka Tower with only 556 apartments in its 297m. The UEM Hotel has been designed by architects Elenberg Fraser.

Victorian planning minister Matthew Guy has recently fast-tracking approval for five large towers with more than 2000 apartments.

Another Singapore developer, Chip Eng Seng, has announced plans to build a 1041 apartment, $250 million 77-storey tower on the former Carlton & United Breweries site in Melbourne.
