Lizard Island undergoing $30m rebuild
The Lizard Island Resort on the Great Barrier Reef that was badly damaged by Cyclone Ita is to be rebuilt at a cost of up to $30 million.
Delaware North Australia Parks and Resorts executive director Greg Magi said the company is committed to restoring and rebuilding Lizard Island and hopes the refurbishment will be completed by the end of the year.
“It will be bigger and even better. We are still assessing the resort property with quantity surveyors. Next week we hope to have design concepts and we’ll be adding some new assets.”
Sunshine Coast company Ri-con Contractors were now cleaning up the resort.
“We have a good history with them and, even more importantly, they are a Queenslander. They developed El Questro’s new villas.”
Mr Magi said the legendary beachside Marlin Bar would be refurbished and the resort would continue to sponsor the seven-day Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic in October.
