Motel on remote island a challenge
Constructing a motel and training centre on a remote island in the Gulf of Carpentaria was never going to be easy but Remote Building Solutions managed to achieve it.
The Mornington Motel and Training Centre on Mornington Island is now open.
The project was broken into two separate contracts, the first being the supply and installation of 10 single bedroom motel units including all site works and the second part being the total refurbishment and change of use of an existing workshop building. The workshop was transformed into a new bakery, retail sales room, a computer training room, a mezzanine storage room, toilet and shower block and a workshop bay.
With the location of this job being on Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the freight of all building materials from Cairns to site via truck and barge had to be carefully coordinated and scheduled to meet strict deadlines. All 10 motel buildings were constructed at Remote Building Solutions’ factory in Cairns and transported to site as a completed module. These buildings were then installed on site with the use of RBS’ own 16 tonne forklift.
The training centre refurbishment had its own challenges with fire walls and data being the biggest hurdle but Remote Building Solutions overcame these challenges and finished the project on time, within budget and to a high standard of finish.
It is on Mornington Island, which is just off the coast of North West Queensland and is part of the Gulf Region. It is located in the town of Gununa, which is the populated area of the island.
