Victoria Report Acts on Apartment Size

The Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s working draft of new Victorian Apartment Design Standards would see a ban on very small apartments in Victoria.

A draft of the new standards for planning minister Matthew Guy indicate studio apartments will have to 37m² minimum with one-bedroom apartments at least 50m² and 90 per cent of apartments would have to receive direct sunlight plus a balcony for each apartment above ground level. It would also enforce a maximum of eight apartments per lift on each floor and 30 per cent of the materials used to build apartments must also be recycled or locally sourced.

The report may require 20 per cent of a development site to be shared space for residents.
