UQ to build on-campus student accommodation

University of Queensland has announced an investment of $100 million to build student accommodation. This will be the first student accommodation owned by the university itself, as all other colleges on campus are independently owned.

Alan Egan is the University of Queensland’s director of property and facilities said, his department called for prospective architectural firms and contractors on September 13.

“We know from research there’s 14,000 students living in rented accommodation in the suburbs around St Lucia like Taringa, over at Dutton Park and Indooroopilly. More than 36,000 students study at St Lucia,”Mr Egan said.

Mr Egan said the vision was for construction to start in January 2016 and be ready for occupation building could be completed by first semester in 2018.

Meanwhile construction of new on-campus accommodation at the University of Newcastle is nearing completion.

It will provide 780 beds, with the project on track to be available for students at the start of the 2015 year.

Vice-cancellor Caroline McMillen said the housing is greatly needed with students often finding it hard to get accommodation near the university due to the high demand.
