Cruise ship terminal could be ready for Games
ASF Consortium has released details of its $7.5 billion Gold Coast cruise ship terminal it plans to deliver to the state government this week.
The cruise ship terminal will be located at the eastern side of Wavebreak Island and ASF says it could be operating in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The tourism part of the project would be on the southern end of Wavebreak Island and would include a marina, boardwalk, integrated resort and casino along with restaurants.
The island would be connected a four lane bridge to Labrador.
On the north side would include a large public beach, anchorages and possibly another resort. The island’s perimeter would be parkland.
The project would take 15 years to complete with stage one work focusing on the integrated resort and terminal.
ASF partner AECOM conducted 35 simulations that indicated a ship of up to 361m (Queen Mary 2/Voyager of the Seas size) could safely enter the Broadwater under all conditions in winds of up to 30km/h. Brookfield Johnson Controls would be the terminal’s proposed operator. Ships would not be refuelled at the facility.
According to ASF, the terminal building would cater for more than 1500 passengers each hour and would include customs and immigration facilities.
ASF says on average, six vessels would arrive each month.
