296-room hotel for Tasmania

Singapore-based Fragrance Group Ltd is proposing a $35 million, 296-room hotel in Hobart’s CBD.

Fragrance paid $4 million earlier this year for 1960s-buildings that will be demolished as developers plan to transform Macquarie St site into four star accommodation.

According to project architect Keith Drew of Hobart’s Xsquared, said the project could be the first hotel in Australia to reach the five-star Green Building Council of Australia certification standard.

“We’ve got significant environmentally sustainable design features,” Mr Drew said.

The proposed 11-storey building would feature a vertical garden up the middle of the facade to reflect the green aspects inside. It would have a restaurant and six retail spaces and be one of the biggest hotels in the city.
