Hotel encompasses Sydney heritage building

A new hotel complex is to be built by Frasers Property Australia on the former Carlton United Brewery site as part of the next stage of Central Park in Sydney.

The proposed buildings will be built above the 1938 heritage-listed art deco Australian Hotel also known as the Abercrombie Hotel, that closed in January.

The 19 storey building, named Four North has been designed by British-based architects Foster + Partners and will have 283 hotel rooms and 48 apartments plus commercial offices, retail areas and a childcare centre. It will be built in front of another block of new student accommodation.

A planning application is now before the Department of Planning and Environment and is on view for public consultation.

Frasers sales director Paul Lowe said the company wanted to keep the old hotel – one of only five original brick hotels in Sydney. “It seems an interesting, innovative design concept in relation to both the old and the new. It’s important to create a cornerstone of integrity to the building, to encapsulate the hotel within a progressive building for the future.”
