Melbourne icon revamp begins next month

The long-awaited redevelopment of Melbourne’s 180-room Windsor Hotel is expected to start within weeks.

Indonesian-based Halim Group has secured planning and heritage approvals for the $330 million redevelopment that will see the refurbishment of its 180-rooms and adding at least 100 more rooms.

A Halim Group spokesman said obtaining planning and heritage permits for the redevelopment of the Victorian-era Windsor Hotel had taken six years. The hotel was built in 1883 and making it older than famous hotels like Singapore’s Raffles Hotel.

The redevelopment is expected to take at least 30 months. Once complete, the five-star hotel will have 281 large rooms. The Windsor is expected to trade through most of next year during the early works.
