Mirvac’s Bondi plan preserves history

Bondi’s historical Scarba House in Sydney is set to be at the focus of a 190 apartment development, after Waverley Council approved Mirvac’s DA.

Mirvac said the apartments would be built over five mid-rise and low-rise buildings designed by William Smart on the 11,138m² site with views of Bondi Beach and the harbour.

Mirvac Group’s John Carfi said the history of the site, and the heritage-listed Scarba House and its grounds would be preserved.

Scarba House, built in 1884, was later acquired by the Benevolent Society and operated until 1986 as a centre for short term residential care for children.

“Significant heritage-listed Moreton Bay Fig trees that are integral to the character of the site will be retained and will form part of extensive new landscaped open space,” said Mr Carfi.

The council recommended acceptance of the DA to the Sydney East Joint Regional Planning Panel which determined the application.
