Brisbane’s favourite street art hotel, TRYP Fortitude Valley Hotel, Brisbane was recognised for its unique interior architecture at the prestigious 2015 Queensland State Architecture Awards held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 26.
The architect behind the interior design and theming for the boutique hotel, Shane Denman from Shane Denman Architects, received the commendation for interior architecture at the award ceremony.
From the 72 projects recognised last month across seven Regional Architecture Awards, 43 projects received recognition at the State Architecture Awards on Friday night, including TRYP Fortitude Valley. All 43 will now progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on November 5.
“This was such a rewarding project to work on and I’m thrilled with the recognition,” Mr Denman said. “It was a collaborative effort with some of Australia’s most talented individuals including project architects M+M, so the commendation is an acknowledgement of their hard work and creativity too,” he added.
TRYP Fortitude Valley Hotel, located on Constance Street in Fortitude Valley, is a landmark of urban design and plays an interesting role in Brisbane’s architectural history. Built in 1955 as a memorial to the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB), who served their king and country, the hotel was originally the clubhouse of the secretive fraternal order.
Developer Jay McPhee bought the building off the RAOB in 2008 and until 2013 the site lay dormant and became an underground haven for street artists. Mr McPhee partnered with Wyndham Hotel Group, to open Australia’s first TRYP by Wyndham hotel and together with architect, Shane Denman, they came up with the idea to preserve, commission and celebrate the street art.
