The sharing economy rental firm has revealed it will start collecting “tourist taxes” in Paris in response to growing outcry from residents throughout the city.
It is the city with the highest Airbnb presence in the world, with 50,000 flats and houses available to rent online. However, the company’s success has created a substantial rivalry with hotels and locals who argue that the firm has turned previously quiet residential areas into busy tourist destinations.
The move to tax tourists is an attempt to work with the criticisms and match the levies charged to hotel guests.
“We are grateful for our strong relationship with the French authorities and are proud to launch this simplified tax process in our number one city,” said Nicolas Ferrary, Airbnb director in France.
