Dick Smith tunes in to moteliers’ plight

The nation’s most famous entrepreneur has added his voice to a campaign by Australian moteliers asking overseas travel agencies to support drought-affected farmers.

Dick Smith heard a recent ABC Radio interview with Charles Ikstrums, chair of the Budget Motels Chain, talking about how more than 125 members had donated accommodation, meals, fuel and tours to give struggling farming families a break from hardship.

Most of the donors come from rural Victoria, NSW, SA and Qld, where moteliers are also struggling as entire communities affected by the drought are travelling and entertaining less.

After hearing about their generosity through ‘Macca’ on the Australia all Over broadcast, Smith thanked the Budget Motel Chain members and joined the group’s call for OTAs to match the generosity of the moteliers and contribute to the relief appeal.

“Although we are still waiting on the response from OTAs to provide assistance to drought-stricken farming families, we are greatly heartened by Dick Smith’s support,” said Charles.

Dick Smith is a long-time advocate of supporting Australian owned and run businesses and has also agreed to help promote direct bookings for accom operators.

“Out of our drought challenge has come an unexpected – but gratefully received – commitment by Dick to the broader motel and hotel industry to raise consumer awareness of the benefits of booking direct and keeping more dollars in regional Australia,” said Ikstrums.
