TripAdvisor tries to calm travel anxiety with new feature

The idea of travelling during a pandemic raises consumer’s anxiety about health and hygiene – all very legitimate concerns, given the recent COVID outbreaks related to several Australian hotels. In push to ease concerns, travel platform, Tripadvisor has added new “Travel Safe” features.

Launched last week, “Travel Safe” tools evolved from a recent TripAdvisor study that showed  9 out of 10 (92 percent) participants sited cleanliness as the key factor when they select accommodations. More than 8 in 10 (84 percent) said cleanliness or sanitisation certificates are also imperative and nearly 8 in 10 (79 percent) declared a publicly displayed certificate of compliance to government safety standards are also a focus.

The addition of these “Travel Safe” tools on the website are designed to make it easier for travellers to find important health and safety information about hotels and restaurants reopening during COVID-19. The new features should help to give consumers peace of mind when they’re ready to start traveling and dining out again with the ability to find and filter according to health and safety practices and information about re-opening.

  • The move aims to give consumers more confidence with their future travel choices: and includes these new features: Health & safety checklists: Leveraging expertise from public health organizations and industry associations across the globe, hotel and restaurant owners can share safety measures directly on their Tripadvisor listing. These include sanitation procedures, mask-wearing guidelines, social distancing policies, and more.
  • Search filter: A new filter allows users to easily find which hotels and restaurants are taking these added safety precautions.
  • Traveller reviews: New review submission form prompts allow users to validate safety measures and share their experiences with other travellers.

The “Travel Safe” feature is available in all 49 markets where Tripadvisor operates, and more than 13,850 properties have already activated the features. Hotels in Australia have already begun to adopt these features, some examples include The Fullerton Hotel Sydney and Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour.

What can Accom owners do?

You can select the safety measures you have in place by accessing the checklist in your Tripadvisor management center (there is no fee to do this).

The checklist enables properties to submit a text description of the steps being taking to protect customers, including links back to safety information on their own websites.

Kanika Soni, chief commercial officer, Tripadvisor, said: “As travel restrictions ease, hospitality businesses must recognize the changing expectations from consumers around safety and cleanliness.

“That is why Travel Safe will be such a vital tool. It will provide consumers with the information and reassurance they need when they travel, while allowing businesses to build trust by highlighting the concrete steps they are taking to keep their customers safe.”
