The announcement, made ahead of Earth Day on April 22, 2024, highlights Dubai’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible tourism. As the first city in the region to mandate sustainability criteria for its hotel classification system, Dubai sets a precedent for sustainable tourism practices.

Launched last year during the UAE Year of Sustainability, which coincided with Dubai hosting the historic COP28 in Expo City Dubai, the initiative aims to empower hotels to achieve their sustainability objectives while meeting DET’s rigorous standards. These standards encompass a wide range of areas including sustainable management approaches, energy and water management plans, guest education, employee training, and Corporate Social Responsibility programs.

The award ceremony, held at Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, was attended by top hospitality executives and DET senior leadership. His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and Mr. Yousuf Lootah, Head of DET Environmental Sustainability & Social Responsibility Committee, presented the awards to the deserving recipients.

Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing said: “To position the city as a leading sustainable destination, and contributing to the UAE’s wider Net Zero goals, Dubai is taking a leading role in driving awareness, fostering education and ultimately creating and supporting opportunities to further advance responsible tourism practices.

The awarding of the first Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamps is an important moment in our collective journey, and we congratulate and thank the participating and winning hotels for their efforts. Through the continued development of the DST Stamp, as well as other current and future initiatives, we look forward to making Dubai the first choice destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainable experience.”

With a one-year validity, the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ joins DET’s portfolio of sustainability initiatives, including the Carbon Calculator and the Dubai Can initiative. These initiatives reflect Dubai’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, setting a precedent for cities worldwide in shaping a greener, more sustainable future.
