Hotels with properties in China warned over hidden data law risks

Many international hotel groups with properties in China may be unknowingly breaching the country’s strict data privacy laws, according to hotel technology firm Ireckonu.

At the centre of the issue are China’s data residency requirements, which mandate that guest data collected within the country must remain there unless specific approvals are granted. Ireckonu warns that a significant number of global hotel technology providers are still storing or processing this data outside of China, leaving their hotel clients exposed to serious legal, financial and reputational risks.

Both international hotel groups and Chinese operators are increasingly concerned about the potential for regulatory enforcement, particularly in today’s tense geopolitical environment. A sudden government crackdown could result in fines, reputational damage and, in extreme cases, disruption to hotel operations.

“We’re seeing growing anxiety in the industry,” said Jan Jaap van Roon, CEO of Ireckonu.

“Many operators have been unaware of the legal risks they’re exposed to, and these risks are real. The time to act is now, as there are solutions to this challenge that we can help with right away. There’s no need to be taking this risk.”

As specialists in hotel data infrastructure and privacy compliance, Ireckonu says many international brands remain unaware of how exposed they are, not just legally but operationally, if their technology stack does not meet Chinese data residency standards.

To address the issue, the company recommends that hoteliers:

• Audit existing data infrastructure to identify where guest data is stored, processed and transferred, particularly for operations involving Chinese guests or properties.

• Consult legal and compliance experts experienced in Chinese data laws to fully assess risk exposure and ensure alignment with local regulations.

• Implement localised middleware solutions that keep data storage and processing within China while maintaining brand-wide operational consistency.

Beyond its technical solutions, Ireckonu says it is actively engaged in discussions with hotel operators on the ground in China and is drawing on real-world insights to help solve compliance challenges.
