Hotel Council Aotearoa launches search for inaugural executive director
The new executive director will act as spokesperson for the hotel sector and be responsible for growing membership of the Hotel Council
Hotel Council Aotearoa (HCA) has today confirmed it will recruit its first executive director, marking a significant step in the organisation’s continued growth and increasing influence across New Zealand’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The newly created role reflects HCA’s evolution into a mature, nationally recognised industry body representing around 250 hotels alongside owners, operators, brands and sector partners.

HCA strategic director James Doolan said the search for an executive director signalled the next phase for the organisation.
“HCA has built strong momentum over the past few years, growing both its membership base and its impact on key policy and industry issues.
“This new role allows us to scale that work further — strengthening our advocacy, deepening member engagement and continuing to build a high-performing, sustainable organisation.”
The executive director will be responsible for leading HCA’s overall performance, advocacy and stakeholder engagement, while working closely with the board and strategic director to deliver the organisation’s strategic priorities.
The role will include acting as the primary spokesperson for the hotel sector, growing membership and revenue, and building relationships with government, industry and key stakeholders. Doolan confirmed he will remain in his role as strategic director, working alongside the successful candidate.

The search is being led by Jackson Stone & Partners, with principal consultant Nikki Franklin supporting the recruitment process.
HCA represents the country’s hotel sector on issues including regulation, taxation, workforce and tourism settings, providing a unified and credible voice to government and stakeholders. Recruitment for the executive director role is now underway.
