Smart fridges redefine the modern minibar
The minbar used to be a staple of hotels and motels, providing chilled drinks and late-night snacks for guests to enjoy.
But we all know that guest preferences are evolving, and today’s travellers are more discerning. A basic selection of beers and soft drinks, and some chips or nuts, are often not enough to satisfy guests. Travellers might want a more substantial meal or greater variety than the in-room offerings.
The Vend Shop has reimagined and upgraded the minibar on a grand scale, with a range of smart fridges. Instead of relying on a limited in-room selection that needs to be manually checked, smart fridges can provide guests with easy access to food including full meals, drinks, snacks, fresh options and other essentials whenever they need them. Freezers with frozen treats like ice creams as well as frozen, microwaveable meals are also available from The Vend Shop.
For guests, this provides unmatched convenience. Products can be accessed quickly with cashless payment, without needing to call reception, wait for room service or leave the property. This is especially valuable for late arrivals, business travellers, families, shift workers, event guests and anyone who wants a quick grab-and-go option outside standard service hours. Product selection does not need to be restricted to just food and drinks, which provides accommodation operators with flexibility. Rhys Kettlety, General Manager, The Vend Shop, explained. “The product range can be adjusted based on the type of property, guest profile, time of year, events nearby or actual consumption patterns. A hotel may choose to stock premium drinks and snacks, while serviced apartments may focus on ready-made meals, breakfast items and everyday essentials.”
Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to minibar offerings, the smart fridge range can be tailored to suit what guests are actually buying.
“Over time, this helps to create a more relevant guest experience, with products that feel useful, practical and aligned with the way people travel today,” Mr Kettlety said.
Smart fridge data can also reduce wastage and limit lost revenue that can come when minibar items are left unused and go out of date. “If certain drinks, snacks or ready-to-eat items are selling consistently, accommodation providers can increase availability of these items. If other products are not selling, these can be replaced with options that better suit guests. Over time, this helps to improved both the guest experience and the commercial return on the smart fridge.”
Additionally, The Vend Shop’s smart fridges help to reduce some of the manual work traditionally associated with guest food and beverage services. “Staff don’t need to check and replace every minibar item manually. The smart fridge provides sales data so staff can see what is actually selling, what needs to be stocked and where demand is coming from, rather than relying on manual checks or guesswork.”
Pressure on reception and service staff is also reduced, with guests able to help themselves with they need something. With team members fielding fewer calls for basic snacks, drinks or convenience items, more time can be spent on guest service.
The Vend Shop supports accommodation providers through the full process of integrating smart fridges into their property, from helping them choose the right smart fridge model through to delivery, setup, servicing and ongoing technical support.
Guidance is provided around the best machine for the property, where it should be placed, how the product range could be structured, and how the technology can support the guest experience. The Vend Shop can also assist with machine delivery, servicing, warranty support, repairs, spare parts and access to machine manuals where needed.
“Ongoing support is important because smart fridges are not just pieces of equipment. They are part of a guest service and operational system,” Mr Kettlety said. “The Vend Shop helps providers understand how to use the technology, monitor performance and keep the smart fridge operating smoothly so it continues to deliver value for guests, staff and the business.”
Mr Kettlety said feedback from accommodation providers and guests using the smart fridges has been positive. “Guests like having access to food and drinks when they need them, without having to wait for service, leave the property, or rely on limited options nearby.
“From a guest experience perspective, the smart fridge adds another layer of convenience to the property. It is a small touch, but it can make a stay feel smoother and more thoughtful, which supports guest satisfaction, repeat bookings and positive word of mouth.”
