Hey big Spenders… Aussies are top Dollar Travellers

Australians are not only going overseas more than ever – 7.51 million in the past 12 months, an increase of 10.1% – but they are among the world’s biggest spenders while travelling.

Australians spent an average of US$3,636 during their last trip, ranking them the biggest travel spenders worldwide, according to the Visa Global Travel Intentions Survey 2011 that surveyed 11,620 respondents from 23 countries and territories around the world.

The research showed the global average holiday spend by respondents in the past two years was US$1481, which is expected to rise to a global average of US$1895 for the next two years.

Respondents from Australia are expected to maintain their big spending status, with an average travel budget of US$3582.

Almost one third of Australian respondents surveyed said they are likely to travel to the United Kingdom for leisure in the next two years. The United States came in a close second, with 26% of respondents planning to travel there, followed by New Zealand (21%).

Ross Jackson, head of Cross-Border Business, Asia Pacific, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa, Visa said: “The UK was a favorite destination of respondents globally, not just with Australian travellers. Of those who want to visit the UK, 27% said they are likely to attend a sporting event. The upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games could be a pull factor and it is an indication that sport tourism is proving to be a growing attraction for today’s travellers.”

Australian respondents are planning to make three international trips in the next two years, indicating they intend to spend an average of 16 nights on their next holiday.

Outbound travel by Australians is growing over 25 times faster than international arrivals in 2011, the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have revealed. Overseas departures climbed 11% for July, taking the number of international trips by Australians over the past 12 months to 7.51 million, an increase of 10.1%.
