Hotel, Apartments Key to Docklands Makeover

A 150-room international hotel will be a centrepiece of Melbourne’s waterfront section of Docklands.

The $700 million makeover will also create four new apartment buildings.

The complex, at the end of New Quay Promenade, will house 2000 new residents, hotel workers and guests when completed in 2015, MAB Corporation director Andrew Buxton said.

The new, 150-room hotel will face the harbour and shield the park from southerly winds, long considered a problem in the area. Nearby shops, many now empty, will be reinvigorated with four apartments built behind them, each designed by different architects, Mr Buxton said.

New Quay Central will cost between $500 million to $700 million and take four years to complete. MAB Corporation bought the struggling Waterfront City site from international bank ING for an unannounced amount. MAB, which earlier this year launched two other 600-dwelling apartments at the opposite end of New Quay, will begin construction of the new project towards the end of 2012.
