IHG/United Voice Launch new Approach to Industrial Relations

United Voice, the hotel workers’ union, and InterContinental Hotel Group has launched The First Star and a historic new approach to industrial relations in Australia.

The union and hotel chain will be working together to improve the hotel industry for travellers and workers alike by highlighting hotels that treat workers and the environment properly.

IHG has been awarded a First Star rating by United Voice members based on their treatment of workers and the environment.

“United Voice is extremely proud to be working with IHG to ensure quality hotels across Australia,” Louise Tarrant, national secretary of United Voice said.

“As anyone who has stayed in an Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza or Holiday Inn can tell you, these are truly quality hotels worth staying at. But, no one knows hotels better than the workers who work inside of hotels. Hotel workers have inside knowledge of what’s going on behind the scenes—of what hotel operators are actually doing.

“And it is workers at IHG hotels who tell us that IHG is doing the right thing—by the environment and by their staff. That’s why they are being awarded a First Star rating.”

The launch in Parliament House was also the unveiling of the First Star website—an online travel booking system that ensures that travellers know which hotels are environmentally conscious and treats workers well.

“We hope that other hotel operators follow IHG’s lead. This initiative is clearly demonstrating to the industry the benefits of dedicating their company to environmental sustainability and treating their staff with respect, as IHG does,” Ms Tarrant said.
