Rex Bases in Newcastle, Expands NSW Regional Network

Regional Express is moving its business into Newcastle, announcing new services between the region and Sydney as well as Ballina/Byron.

Subject to regulatory approval, commencing 30 October this year Rex said it will fly three times daily, 38 weekly return flights between Sydney and Newcastle and kick off daily return services between Newcastle and Ballina/Byron Bay.

Newcastle Airport chief executive Paul Hughes said the new services will assist leisure and business travellers from Sydney, with an additional 92,000 seats between the two cities.

“Newcastle Airport is currently one of Australia’s fastest growing airports,” Mr Hughes said. “The impact of this new airline and new destination will not only provide passengers with greater choice, but have a significant and positive impact on the local economy.”

Regional Express is set to commence airline services seven days a week from Newcastle, close to the coal-rich Hunter Valley, to Sydney and Ballina/Byron Bay from the end of October.

Rex is also starting a daily return service between Newcastle and Ballina/Byron Bay.
