Bendigo hotel proposal faces protests

Eaglehawk’s plans to turn Bendigo’s New Victoria Hotel into a 28-bed boarding house has been hit with a wave of protests.

City of Greater Bendigo town planner Bryce Killian said he expected council would receive in excess of 100 objections to the planning application.

Ivar Hunt has been operating a bottle shop at the New Victoria Hotel since July and wants to add a bar, 28 single bedrooms and a communal kitchen and dining area to the complex. He said he hoped the hotel would provide low cost accommodation for people who needed it.

But his plans have drawn wide- spread concern from Eaglehawk residents and business owners. But Mr Hunt dismissed all of the complaints. He said he already ran two Bendigo businesses which offered similar services, The Old Crown Hotel in Hargreaves Street and the Rose of Australia in Long Gully, with no problems
