Rydges to manage new $68m Sydney airport hotel

A private developer, Denwol Group, is to build a $68 million hotel to be operated by Rydges

as part of the revamp of the Sydney International Airport terminal.

Construction on the four-star hotel is expected to start immediately with an intention to have it finished by late next year.

The Denwol Group of companies is owned by Phillip Wolanski but investing in the project will also be companies associated with David Baffsky and John Landerer. Rydges Hotels and Resorts is owned by Amalgamated Holdings.

The chief executive of Sydney Airport, Kerrie Mather, said the new hotel would enhance the airport as Australia’s international gateway and improve passenger experience. The international terminal catered for 11.39 million passengers in 2010.

”Sydney Airport has a direct role in the promotion of tourism in Sydney, NSW and Australia and the development of a new four-star hotel will enhance Sydney as a premier destination for inbound tourism to Australia,” she said. ”We continue to invest in projects that we see as enhancing Sydney Airport as a world-class airport experience and to expand our range of services to meet the needs of passengers, family and friends.”

Ms Mather said investment in a new hotel would give more choice in airport accommodation.

The hotel will add to the new international precinct at the airport that includes an expansion of the number of restaurants, bars and conference facilities. Within the international terminal, the arrival and departure duty-free offerings were also substantially expanded and are said to be operating above expectations.

It is believed that a nearby beach area owned by the airport company may become the site of a new function centre.
