Apartments proposed for Darwin mall
Plans for a 14-storey apartment block in the middle of Darwin goes before the planning authority this week.
Architect George Kapetas wants to build 16 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom units in Smith Street Mall.
Mr Kapetas said the $11 million development would rejuvenate the mall and hopes work will begin this month and take 12-15 months.
“The council has been talking about fixing up the mall for 20 years and all they’ve managed to do is put in a few benches and a bit of kiddies’ play equipment,” he said.
The 43m-high building will be narrow and deep – it will have a 15.93m Smith St frontage and run back 63.85m to West Lane. The apartments would sell for between $320,000-$450,000.
