Environment a Concern to Accor Despite Success

Accor has released a major new sustainability report detailing how the company’s 4200 hotels impact the environment, potentially paving the way for the hotel chain to impose new green procurement criteria on some of its suppliers.

In what is being hailed as an industry first, Accor worked with consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers to produce the 30-page report analysing the environmental impact of both the hotel’s direct activities and its global supply chain.

The report revealed that the company’s efforts to curb its environmental impacts have enjoyed success over recent years, reducing water consumption per rented room by 12% between 2006 and 2010 and cutting energy use per available room by 5.5% over the same period. However, the report also confirms that the chain retains a significant environmental impact, with its 4200 hotels using almost 545 million litres of water a year and consuming around 18 billion kWh of energy – equivalent to a 386,000-inhabitant European city.

The company said the report would help it to redouble efforts to enhance energy and water efficiency across its estate and reduce its overall environmental impact. But it added that it had also allowed it to identify supply chain impacts that needed addressing.
