SkyCity wants part of Torrens riverbank development

The owner of the Adelaide Casino, SkyCity, wants to build a five-star, 100-room “boutique” hotel as part of a “truly world class integrated entertainment facility” as part of the riverbank redevelopment.

The hotel would have a rooftop pool overlooking the River Torrens, signature restaurants and bars and international VIP gambling suites.

The company has been in negotiations with the state government for the past few years on the conditions surrounding any development. SkyCity has called for changes to the regulations that govern the casinoclaiming the 43.5% tax it pays is the highest in Australia. Chief executive Nigel Morrison said SkyCity’s tax rate compared with about 30% being paid by casinos in the eastern states.

“Our aim, providing we can get the appropriate regulatory framework to justify the investment, is to invest around $250-plus million,” he said. “It will really allow us to transform the Adelaide Casino into a world-class tourism destination … and give us a VIP offering which we currently don’t have.”
