Chinese airline priority for South Australia

South Australia’s new tourism boss will target more investment and the Chinese market during her 12-month term.

SA Tourism Commission board chairwoman Jane Jeffreys controversially replaced former commission chief executive Ian Darbyshire last week. Ms Jeffreys retained the chairwoman role and will act as chief executive in a part-time capacity for the next 12 months while the commission undergoes reform.

In her first substantive interview since taking the top job, Ms Jeffreys moved to assure tourism operators there was now “calm” and “strong” leadership guiding the $4.4 billion industry.

Charged with finding $6 million in savings, Ms Jeffreys said it was “too early” to detail potential cuts but stressed she wanted to maintain a strong marketing budget.

Her priorities for the year included the push to secure a Chinese airline flying to Adelaide and encouraging more investment to build tourism attractions and accommodation across the state.
