ARAMA resident managers ready for new laws

All I can say is….Wow! November was an incredibly busy month for ARAMA as the “Goodbye PAMDA… Hello POA” roll-out took place across the State of Queensland.

ARAMA welcomed 90 per cent of our membership in a statewide face-to-face briefing tour, in conjunction with the Office of Fair Trading and members of our legal panel. The events were designed to ensure Queensland resident managers are ready to change over to the new Property Occupations Act. Events took place from the Gold Coast north to Port Douglas and the response from members was fantastic. Everyone benefitted from the opportunity to discuss the implications the new legislation will have upon Queensland’s management rights industry.

The forums included a detailed review of the new legal and operational requirements of the act. However, the most significant part of the program was the discussions around day-to-day management issues that resident managers need to fulfill to ensure all stakeholders are well served. It seems the best discussions begin when members become engaged in the process of change.

The legislative review has been taking place for years, with ARAMA and other interested stakeholders engaging with the Office of Fair Trading, the Justice Department and the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee to get the key items into legislation.

I want to thank everyone involved in the delivery of the events across Queensland. It is most rewarding to see so many of our members engaged at an ARAMA event… and frankly it brings renewed energy to the countless volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure the management rights industry flourishes. With tourism a key pillar in the state government’s economic strategy and density living becoming a growing choice of many investors and home owners, the POA brings renewal and focus to our industry.

And there is more to come- as next year the Queensland parliament will continue the review of another key act, the Body Corporate and Community Management Act. An independent research group is already meeting with stakeholders to establish the focus of the review.

Incredibly, we find ourselves at the end of another year! As we head into the exciting summer holiday season, on behalf of the entire ARAMA team, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope that 2015 is filled with never-ending joy and success!
