Bayside Geelong’s stunning waterfront rebirth: Choice Hotels unveils first stage of major transformation
The property has undergone several evolutions, now reimagined as a 4.5-star, 110-room boutique hotel
A new era has arrived on Geelong’s waterfront as Bayside Geelong Hotel & Apartments, an Ascend Collection Hotel, reveals the first phase of its multi-million-dollar redevelopment—a transformation set to redefine luxury in the region.
Originally opened in 1962 as the Hamilton Hume Motor Inn, the property has undergone several evolutions, most recently operating as Quality Hotel Bayside Geelong. Now reimagined as a 4.5-star, 110-room boutique hotel, the project blends modern sophistication with a deep connection to local heritage and community.

A vision shaped by history and place
General Manager Kevin Robe said the redevelopment was about more than just a facelift.
“We’re creating a hotel that reflects the spirit of Geelong: its history, its people, and its future,” Robe said. “From the architecture and interiors to the smallest design details, we’ve drawn inspiration from our stunning bayfront location, the region’s wool and textile heritage, and its Indigenous roots.”
Stage one complete
With 60 percent of the original structure demolished, the completed first stage features:
-
A new lobby and guest arrival area
-
Franca’s Ristorante, an all-day Italian-inspired dining venue
-
79 new guest rooms with premium finishes
-
Seven flexible meeting and event spaces
-
A fitness centre, sauna, and indoor lap pool with accessibility hoist
The transformation is already boosting the local economy, creating around 300 construction jobs and 75 ongoing operational roles.
Designed for inclusivity and sustainability
Accessibility and sustainability are key pillars of the project. Ten rooms have been designed for accessibility, including seven twin-share options suitable for families, carers, and travelling companions. The hotel also incorporates energy and water-saving technologies, a 100kW solar array, Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) systems, double-glazed windows, and smart LED lighting controls. EV charging stations will be available in the underground car park, and the restaurant will serve plated breakfasts to minimise food waste.
Culinary excellence with a local touch
Helmed by Executive Chef John Hornsey, whose career spans Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury venues worldwide, Franca’s Ristorante pays tribute to the hotel’s founder, Francesca.
Backed by Choice Hotels’ global network
Trent Fraser, CEO of Choice Hotels Asia-Pac, said the redevelopment embodies the Ascend Collection’s ethos.
“Bayside Geelong Hotel & Apartments is a shining example of what the Ascend brand represents: unique, locally connected, and independently owned hotels that offer authentic experiences,” Fraser said. “This project reflects the strength of our franchise model, where local passion is backed by the scale and support of a global network.”
The next chapter for Geelong’s waterfront
Set on 13–15 The Esplanade, the hotel boasts sweeping views of Corio Bay and sits within walking distance of Geelong’s vibrant CBD and entertainment precinct. When the redevelopment is completed in late 2026, guests can expect a striking new façade and a fine-dining restaurant with panoramic bay views.
Bayside Geelong participates in the Choice Privileges rewards program, allowing members to earn and redeem points across more than 7,000 Choice-branded hotels in 46 countries.
