Bumper Snow Season Predicted as Snow Arrives Early

With heaps of early snow already covering the skifields, Australia’s ski resorts are already looking forward to a great season this year.

As the temps drop and the first signs of snow fall on the ground in the Snowy Mountains, Perisher has fired up its snowmaking guns overnight to get ready for the official opening weekend on 11-13 June.

While predictions are coming in thick and fast about this season being a huge one, Perisher wants to ensure its visitors get the most out of the early part of the season so will be the first resort to start snowmaking in Australia for 2011.

Consisting of 271 snow guns, Perisher’s snowmaking system covers a massive 53.4ha of terrain and if 2010 is anything to go by, where Perisher broke the record in Australia for making the most snow in one season (900,000m³), 2011 won’t disappoint.

“With just over four weeks to go until the season kicks off, we’re absolutely thrilled the temps have dropped low enough to allow us to start snowmaking,” says Perisher’s CEO Peter Brulisauer. “We’re completely committed to ensuring we provide the best snow conditions throughout the entire season and if that means starting up the guns overnight and giving Mother Nature a helping hand, we’re ready for it!”

Snow has started falling in Thredbo over the past week and to celebrate the first snow falls, Lantern is offering its Third Night Free package that includes stays on the June long weekend.

“We’re still a month out from the June Long Weekend and the start of the 2011 snow season but with the cold temps set to stick around for some time, it’s an encouraging start,” said Ian Foster, general manager of The Lantern Property Group that operates Lantern Apartments, Lhotsky Apartments and Snow Stream Apartments amongst others.

“If the snow and cold weather keeps coming, it could be the best value start to winter in quite a while,” Mr Foster continued.

Lantern Thredbo Apartments offer a complete range of apartment accommodation from the recently renovated apartments in the Lantern to the spacious, centrally located Lhotsky apartments and the Snow Stream properties near the Friday Flat ski lift station
“Snowmaking in Thredbo is also likely to start around late May, with the guns firing up weather dependent. This combined with the current cold temperatures bodes well for a very exciting start to the 2011 season.”
