Coalition announces tourism forum

Shadow tourism minister Bob Baldwin (pictured) has announced a public hearing date specific to the Tourism sector as part of the Coalition’s Industries for Australia’s Future Review.

On 29 August, opposition leader Tony Abbott announced a policy review of Industries for Australia’s Future, to be co-chaired by Sophie Mirabella, shadow minister for innovation, industry and science, and Ian Macfarlane, shadow minister for energy and resources.

Speaking at the Tourism and Transport Forum conference last week in Canberra, Mr Baldwin said a special one day hearing on tourism would be held since it is such an important part of Australia’s economy, providing employment for nearly 500,000 Australians and accounting for $92 billion of economic activity.

“With $24 billion in export earnings, tourism is Australia’s largest services export earner,” Mr Baldwin said. “The one-day tourism and hospitality forum will inform the opposition’s broader Industries for Australia’s Future Review and is in addition to roundtables in capital cities and regional centres. It will provide tourism operators and other interested parties extra opportunity to engage the review, and discuss matters unique to the tourism sector.

“The coalition is keen to hear policy suggestions relating to any impediment to inbound and domestic tourism – from productivity and training to carbon tax and other business input costs. As Labor rolls from one policy failure to another, the Coalition is working hard to ensure that the government policy settings provide the best possible support to industry. We are confident that Australian industry can have a vibrant, competitive future,” Mr Baldwin said.

Tourism, transport, accommodation and hospitality sector member organisations, operators and interested individuals are invited to attend this special hearing:

Time: 9am to 5pm
Date: 4 November
Venue: Committee Room 1R3, Parliament House Canberra
Secretariat: [email protected], (02) 6277 4200
(Bookings are essential)

Parties unable to present in person are invited to make written submissions. All submissions are to be received no later than 5pm, 28 October.
