The 92-year-old Burketown Pub (pictured) – Queensland’s most remote hotel – has been almost completely destroyed by fire.

A town of about 200 people, Burketown can be found 200km from Normanton, near the Gulf of Carpentaria. The pub was established in 1920, was originally known as the Customs Bond Store.

Two people who lived in the hotel and the hotel guests escaped without injury.

The motel was fully booked but the fire was isolated to the office and rooms were not affected by the fire.

In Sydney, The Newtown Hotel that was being renovated had its first floor collapse and a spokesman said it was believed that there was a bow in two other walls. Building inspectors and structural engineers are to examine the building amidst fears of possible further collapses.
