Virgin Axes Townsville-Gold Coast Service
Virgin Australia is cancelling the remaining flights between Townsville and Gold Coast route effective 3 May.
The service started at seven flights a week back in April 2009 but losses on the route saw these cut back to three/week in March 2011. Having sold its 74-seat Embraer aircraft, Virgin has been using its newer 95-seat jets adding to the unprofitability of the service.
The news comes on top of Virgin closing the Townsville to Canberra route in September last year.
In a statement the company stressed, “Virgin Australia re-mains committed to Townsville and continues to operate from other cities including Sydney, Brisbane and Rockhampton.”
