Virgin Consolidates Skywest Link

Virgin Australia has invested $8 million in regional carrier Skywest.

Skywest already operates its aircraft with Virgin and plans to use the investment to expand their services.

In 2011 Virgin created new routes to the Queensland mining centres of Gladstone and Emerald and to Port Macquarie in NSW adding to existing regional services in Victoria to Mildura and Albury, in NSW (Newcastle, Ballina, Coffs Harbour), Queensland (Townsville, Rockhampton, Proserpine, Hervey Bay, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Hamilton Island) and in Western Australia (Port Headland, Karratha, Geraldton, Bussleton, Albany, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Newman, Learmonth).

Skywest is flying new Virgin-liveried turbo-prop ATR 72 aircraft wet leased from Virgin Australia on the routes, with plans to expand the fleet from four to 12 over the next 18 months.
