Dunk Island camping restored

The Cassowary Coast has secured $400,000 Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery funding to reconstruct the camping ground and the amenities block on Dunk Island’s damaged camping ground.

Camping has been prohibited on the island since Cyclone Yasi struck in February 2011 and many tourism operators have struggled as a result.
Reconstruction work will begin in July with a reopening to campers scheduled for September.
Mayor Bill Shannon said the Queensland Reconstruction Authority had approved a Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery funding submission for the camping ground and a footbridge on the southern side of the around-the-island walking track. This was on top of money for a new amenities block and work to connect the block with resort sewerage and electricity systems.
