Wyndham Reduces Carbon Footprint With Initiatives

Wyndham Worldwide, parent company of Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific based on the Gold Coast, recently announced that it has reduced its carbon footprint by 5%, according to the company’s 2011 sustainability report.

As it works towards its goal of dropping carbon emissions by 12% by 2016, the hotelier tracks its energy use and other sustainable efforts through a ‘Wyndham Green Toolbox’ eco-software program.

Wyndham Worldwide co-launched the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative in partnership with more than 20 other hotel chains, the International Tourism Partnership, and the World Travel & Tourism Council.

In Australia, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific has created its own initiatives to contribute to the global company’s Wyndham Green program.

In 2011, approximately 500 employees based at the corporate office on the Gold Coast, Queensland, relocated to a state-of-the-art Five-Star Green Star rated building through the Green Building Council of Australia.

Since the relocation, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific has achieved a 47% reduction of electricity consumption and a 389 per cent reduction in paper usage. It is the building’s environmentally sustainable design principles that have resulted in lower energy consumption and a reduction in electricity usage with the use of reticulated water in the toilets and surrounding gardens, efficient zoned air-conditioning, sensor lights and a power saving mode on all photocopiers.

Other contributors to the sustainable building include double glazed windows throughout the building, external shading on the western façade and recycling bins at all work stations around the office.

Another Wyndham Green initiative, which has proven to be effective, is the Wynnie the Wallaby Green Adventure for young guests staying at a selection of Wyndham managed resorts in the South Pacific.

Wynnie the Wallaby is a children’s green activity that provides them with a fun and informative lesson in reducing their carbon footprint, with the use of an activity booklet, which includes games and a quiz that lead the children to clues located around the resort grounds.
