Backpackers expand, change hands

The backpackers hostel Somewheretostay is to expand to accommodate the growing number of travellers flocking to Brisbane.

Eski Toumbas, owner of the hostel, said the acquisition of an adjoining property will allow the hostel in Brisbane to increase its occupancy from 130 guests to just under 200. These rooms will comprise of private rooms catering for up to four people, to large shared dorms rooms sleeping approximately eight travellers at budget prices.

Mr Toumbas explained, “We calculated that we had to turn away over 3000 guests in 2012 due to simply not having the room. The extra beds will help us increase our capacity and alleviate the problem so many travellers are having when trying to find accommodation in Brisbane.”

Meanwhile, one of the best located backpackers hostels in the country, Tin Billy Travellers in Brisbane has been bought by Base. It will be renamed Base Brisbane Uptown.

Base CEO Campbell Shepherd said “he was delighted with this result as it meant that the existing management team in Brisbane would continue to run the business and be able to capitalize on the significant expansion opportunities available to Base”.

Base operates 1650 beds in six lodges in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Magnetic Island and Airlie Beach.
