Heroic action saves man’s life
Chartered accountants, especially management rights specialists, are often called to go the extra mile but Damien Moffrey found the need to go a lot further than most.
While cycling home from the gym at Mermaid Beach, Damien found a fellow cyclist in a pool of blood on the road and stopped to assist the stricken man. He had suffered a heart attack and crashed. Damien immediately began CPR while a trainee-nurse passerby performed chest compression.
Although the cyclist stopped breathing three times before his normal breathing rhythm was restored, he survived.
Damien, partner at Bundall-based Baker Affleck Moffrey chartered accountants, is also vice-president of Northcliffe SLSC and he credited his years of surf life saving training with giving him the ability to save the man’s life.
“All I could think of was whether he had a wife and kids and how devastating it would have been for them,” Damien said of his heroic act.
