Backpacker experience for Alice
Federal Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, officially opened a new venue in Alice Springs that will give backpackers the chance to interact directly with indigenous cultural activities involving music, art, and wildlife.
The new venue at the Haven Backpacker Resort, will give backpackers a positive, trusting and alcohol-free environment to interact with indigenous people, exchange information, share skills and create arts and crafts.
“This new venue will encourage longer stays and increase spending in the area, whilst also providing indigenous employment opportunities and encouraging community involvement,” Mr Snowdon said.
Events will include wildlife displays and interaction, local indigenous musicians, cultural shows, storytelling and art.”
The popular resort, which welcomed 18,500 guests through its doors in the year ending June 2012, completed the development project with the support of a $44,000 T-QUAL Tourism Quality Project grant.
The funding covered the construction of a multi-level deck, low-level tiered seating, a retractable canvas floor covering and shaded areas.
